Who we are and what we do:
After teaching biology in some of the top grammar and independent schools in London and running a successful department, I began tutoring from home in the evenings. I have been joined by Ian who teaches mathematics and Mel who teaches chemistry. We found there was a niche for highly skilled, high level tutoring to enable students to achieve the highest grades and gain good offers from universities. We offer one to one and small group tuition from my home in Wilmslow. Working individually and in small groups enables a more tailored approach which has a greater impact on student learning.
Why have tuition?
Generally, parents contact me because they are worried that their son or daughter has done well at GCSE but is now achieving lower grades at A level and they want them to feel happier in their subject and to achieve the target grade needed for their university of choice. Usually if tuition is started early enough in the first term of AS it is possible to increase grade potential from say, an E to a C, within a relatively short time. Some students have gone from an E/U to an A in six months.
‘Tuition has helped me to develop a better understanding of biology as a whole which made the subject much more enjoyable and gave me confidence to get higher grades. Through lessons I developed good analytical skills and strategies to do well at harder questions. Regular testing and feedback pin-pointed my weak spots and then sorted them out. Andrea also gave me particular strategies for my dyslexia. I feel like I have gone from a U to an A in a year which was amazing for me. I would never have believed I could have come this far in one year.’
‘I feel like I have become more confident in answering questions and even when I wasn’t 100% clear on an exam question, I was able to use knowledge and skills from lessons and apply this to the question to come up with a high grade answer. Group sessions were great because we cover so much but at the end we understand the topic and recall tests consolidate what we have learnt. Question packs are really useful especially the harder baccalaureate questions which we use for extension work. Overall, I feel like I have improved a tremendous amount and achieved a grade I know I wouldn’t have without Andreas sessions.’
‘As a mature student going back to study biology A-level in a year, I knew the course was going to be hard. I lacked confidence and being out of education for 8 years meant I lost my learning and exam technique. This was reflected in my college Christmas grades by getting a low D and E in my mocks for AS. Extra tuition from Andrea turned everything around by honing in on exactly what I was struggling with. Through question practice (especially analytical), looking at revision and exam techniques, group study sessions, mock exams, feedback, I turned by grades around to an A and B in AS and because I took the full A level in one year, a high C overall. Andrea gave me the confidence and belief in my ability to achieve my biology A level. I was delighted when I received an unconditional offer from my first choice uni. I am following my dream and will begin training as a Midwife this September’.
Why is tutoring so successful at boosting grades?
Students are individually supported through their learning. School work is reinforced and misconceptions clarified.
As understanding deepens, confidence grows. Most importantly students learn how to learn and we develop personalised learning strategies.
